ECEN 4517 - Power Electronics Laboratory

Catalog Description: Analysis, modeling, design, and testing of electrical energy processing systems, in a practical laboratory setting. Included are power electronics converters for efficient utilization of available energy sources, and energy sources including solar panels and the utility. A final design project involves design, fabrication, and testing of a solar power system.

Prerequisites: ECEN 3170, Energy Conversion 1

Textbook: Erickson and Maksimovic, Fundamentals of Power Electronics, Kluwer, 2001 (optional), and notes prepared by the instructor.

Course Objectives: To provide laboratory experience to supplement theory in Energy Conversion 1.

Topics:

  1. DC motors
  2. Power electronics converters
  3. Basic magnetics and transformers
  4. AC machines
  5. Design project
Class Schedule: 1 hour of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory per week

Contribution of course to meeting Criterion 4, the professional component: This course provides 2 semester hours of electrical engineering topics consisting of engineering sciences and engineering design.

Relationship of course to program outcomes: This course is not required and is not included in outcomes assessment.
